Title: Level 2 Science Camp
Dates: July 19th – July 23rd, 2010

Description:
From Here to There – Meet at the Longway Science Classroom for some warm-up activities and then walk to Sloan to visit “From Here to There”. We’ll make a mini hovercraft, design a sailboat and investigate a maglev train. Use a block and tackle pulley system to lift yourself up. Walk back to Longway and work together to create a Rube Goldberg contraption (a complicated system built to do an easy task).
Dissections – See how things work! “Dissect” some appliances, old toys, radios and other old objects and see if you can put them back together again. Dissect owl pellets while investigating food webs. Explore the structure and function of the eye, heart and lung while dissecting these organs.
Planetarium Garden – Spend some time in the garden! Harvest some seed pods, dissect a flower and make a flower model while learning the structure and function of plant parts. Use dried flowers and leaves to make a piece of art to put in a frame that you decorate. Set up the plant presses to dry flowers.
Space – Make a Star Finder that will help you find seasonal constellations, make a star frame with your favorite constellation, and build and launch a water-powered R2K rocket. Pre-registration required. Click here to register!
Title: Opposite Day

Description: Experiment with opposites! Use balances to sort heavy and light rocks, play with objects that sink or float, make a balloon that goes up and a balloon that falls down, feel smooth and rough surfaces and see how each surface effects motion. Title: Solar Power

Description: Explore how energy from the sun can be harnessed to do work! Make and take your own solar powered car using the supplied parts and instructions.

Title: Science and Art

Cost: $7
Location: Longway Planetarium
Description: Explore color mixing while making blotter bugs to take home. Use an ice cube and tempera paint to explore melting while making a colorful butterfly. Investigate evaporation while making a project with water paints.

Title: Astro Camp
Dates: July 26th – July 30th, 2010
Times: 9:00 – 12:00pm
Grade Levels: Entering 6th – 8th Grades
Cost: $85
Location: Longway Planetarium
Description: Learn about the Planets, Sun, Moon and the Stars with hands-on activities and planetarium shows! Enjoy daily snacks like the astronauts eat while living in space. Students will design their own mission patches for their T-shirt, build rockets, hunt for meteorites, engineer a solar oven, and make a spectroscope. At the end of the camp, grown-ups will enjoy a personal guided tour from their own child of the History of Space Museum featuring exhibits built by the students. At Noon on the final day, students will launch their rockets for all to see!

Title: What’s Bugging You?

Description: Go on a bug hunt in the Planetarium garden. Use craft materials to make models of insects and spiders. Work together to build a spider web. Get up close and personal with Longway’s classroom pets; Madagascar Hissing Roaches!

Title: Geology Rocks!
Date: August 2nd, 2010

Description: Calling all rock hounds! Explore igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks and the rock cycle. Investigate weathering, erosion and the impact of acid rain. Make a piece of mineral jewelry and take home some rock, mineral and fossil samples to add to your collection.

Title: Rocket Science – 2 Day Class!
Date: August 2nd and 3rd, 2010
Time: 9:00 – 12:00pm each day
Grade Level: 5th – 8th
Cost: $22
Location: Longway Planetarium
Description: Build and fly your own model rockets! On day 1 we will learn what makes a successful model rocket and construct “Alpha” and “Viking” rockets. On Day 2, we will launch our rockets; first with a smaller “test” engine, and if everything checks out, a second launch with a much more powerful engine. No prior model rocket building experience needed.

Title: Garden Crafts

Cost: $7

Description: Explore the Planetarium garden while making beautiful crafts to take home. Learn about the parts of a flower while making a flower mask. Use dried flower petals and leaves to make a piece of art. Mix up cement to make a small stepping stone.
